Abstract:

The present work is focused towards the design and development of a prototype of air cooling system for truck cabin using waste heat from engine exhaust.From the literature review in the field of automobile air conditioning, it is observed that very little work has been done in the field of cabin cooling of transport trucks. The available options in heat generated cooling have been critically reviewed. The vapour adsorption refrigeration cycle is found to be suitable for transport trucks. Activated carbon and ammonia are selected as the suitable adsorbent - refrigerant pair. The mass balance and energy balance equations used to design the proposed system and the design of the system is presented. A scale of 3.5:1 is decided and a prototype of 1 kW has been designed. The COP is in the range of 0.33 and heat required to drive the proposed system is 3 kW against available potential of 24.08 kW. The system dimensions have been obtained and found to be suitable for transport truck and the system can operate in mobile applications.
