Abstract:

This study is a critical discourse analysis of power and ideology behind translation of news headlines in the English and Persian media and press. The study examined the role of power, ideology and discourse in specific and the role of intertextuality, cultural, and social backgroundin general in selection and translation of news headlines. In addition, it analyzes the changes in the process of translation of headlines when the content and theme of news are the same. This studyis a qualitative type which is descriptive in nature. To administer the study, Fairclough’s CDA method and Lefevere’s ideology method was applied on 20 samples that were selected fromPersian and English newspapers and news websites. Results of this study show that it is the ideology of patronage and target audience that are the most influential factors in selection of headlines and language of their translation
