Abstract:
This paper studies a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) with different controllers employed in order to improve the transient stability in a distribution system. D-STATCOM control strategy plays an important role in improving the damping of the system. In this study, the DSTATCOM control system with two conventional PI and self-tuning fuzzy PI controllers is designed. Also, to have a better performance of the self-tuning fuzzy PI controller, input and output scales are optimized by a teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm. Simulation of a D-STATCOM including ±3 MVar reactive power over a 25 kV distribution system is done in MATLAB / SIMULINK software. Finally, controllers are evaluated by comparing their performance with each other. It is observed that the self-tuning fuzzy PI controller is more effective in improving transient stability than the conventional PI controller as well as optimization of the fuzzy PI controller will improve its performance
