Abstract:

Background: Tooth development in a complex process involves both epithelial and mesenchymal components. Immunohistochemical markers may be useful adjunct tool indifferential diagnosis of odontogenic tumors. Aim: The aim of study was to collect and classify the effective, appropriate immunohistochemical markers in diagnosis ofodontogenic tumors. Material and Method: In this review, the useful immunohistochemical markers in diagnosing and differentiating of benign and malignant odontogenic tumors were reserved and classified from 2000 to 2016. Results: The most useful immunohistochemical markers in diagnosing and differentiating of odontogenic tumors were as follows: CK 14 and 19 are useful markers in separation of odontogenic tumors with epithelial origin such as adenomatoid odontogenic tumor and ameloblastomas from mesenchymal odontogenic tumors. Amelogenin and Ameloblastin express in epithelial odontogenic tumors without ectomesenchyme component. Calretinin can be useful in differentiating the unicystic ameloblastoma from other cystic pathologic lesions. For differentiation the odontogenic tumors with forming calcifying masses, tenascin is a useful immunohistochemical marker. Discontinuity in expression of laminin correlates to aggressive behavior of tumors Conclusion: Immunohistochemical markers can be adjunct diagnostic tool in differential diagnosis of malignant odontogenic tumors. In differentiating the most cases of benign odontogenic tumors, clinical, radiology, and detail histopathologic examinations are satisfactory.
