Abstract:

Background and Objective: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer diagnosed worldwide, including Iran that has increased because of changes in lifestyle and diet. Despite the importance of CRC, Up to now, far too little attention has been paid to it. Recent studies have shown that different adipose tissue-specific secretory factor (ADSF) such as ghrelin and resistin has a critical role in the preservation of energy balance and preventing of CRC, However, the influence of ghrelin and resistin on improvement of CRC has remained unclear, so we studied the serum level of ghrelin in patients with CRC. Method and Material: Tow groups participated in this study. We have CRC group with 82 patients with CRC & control group with 88 control individuals. They divided into those groups after colonoscopy as primary Diagnosis and the demographic data such as age, sex, family history was collected by questionnaire. The fast blood samples were taken from patients and individuals and centrifuged. Then the plasma of samples was kept in frizzier at -70º C in order to measure samples in the later times. The plasma glucose was measured by oxidation method, then the plasma insulin, ghrelin, and resistin was measured by ELISA method. Data were analyzed by SPSS (version 19). P<0/05 was considered significant. Findings: Both groups were same in percentage of men and women, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) use and addiction and there was no significant difference between the two groups. The plasma level of ghrelin in patients with rectal cancer in CRC group was significantly (226/87 ± 89/58 pg/ml) lower in comparison to patients with colon cancer in CRC group (281/80 ± 106/01 pg/ml) & control group (356/81± 77/48pg/ml). A positive correlation was found between the Homeostatic model assessment – insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and plasma level of resistin. Logistic regression showed that there were significant positive correlations among CRC with age, HOMA and BMI (p=0.00), There was no evidence that ghrelin has an influence on resistin and have not correlation together. Conclusion: This study showed that the serum level of ghrelin was less in patients with CRC and resistin level has not significant difference between control and CRC group. The level of resin and ghrelin is unrelated .Many scientists have suggested that in the end-stage patient, physicians should prescript ghrelin as an energetic favorable appetitive drug for treating cachexia, as it can increase survival. Further studies should trail it.
