The prevalence of child abuse and its association with parental style in Sanandaj primary students in 2016

Abstract:

Background: Child abuse causes psychiatric problems and unpleasant and annoying behaviors in children. The most important causes of child abuse are family and parenting style s variables. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of child abuse and its relationship with parental style in Sanandaj primary students in 2016. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional - analytical study. The sample size was 393 and Sampling method was cluster randomized. The standardized child abuse questionnaire and the baumarind parenting style questionnaire were used for this study. Measures of Dispersion were used for quantitative variables and Chi-square test was used to examine the relationship between qualitative variables. P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: among 393students, 44.8% were male and 55.2% were female. 74.2% students, have suffered from psychological and emotional child abuse. 58.4% students, have suffered from physical child abuse and 99% students, have suffered from neglect child abuse. Neglect, were found most in the girls, but Physical child abuse were observed most in boys. There were significant relationship between Father s job and physical child abuse (P=0.017) similarly there were significant relationship between child abuse in students with level of their birth (P=0.008). Also aninverse, significant correlation was found between authoritative parenting styles with physical child abuse (p=0.009). In other cases, there was no significant relationship (P> 0.05).Conclusions: Due to high prevalence of child abuse and negative significance relationship with reasonable parenting style it is recommended that parents used this parenting style to train their children to reduce child abuse and violence of their children in the future.
