Abstract:
The genus Salvia (sage), comprising about 1000 species which widely distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions of the world, is the biggest genus in the medicinally important Lamiaceae family. Salvia lachnocalyx Hedge is one of the 17 endemic Salvia species of Iran with distribution restricted to the Fars province. This genus is characterized by structurally diverse terpenoids as well as a wide spectrum of phenolic compounds and flavonoids with interesting biological activities. As a part of our ongoing research program aimed at the characterization of secondary metabolites of Iranian endemic Salvia species, we started the phytochemical analysis of Salvia lachnocalyx Hedge. Successive column chromatography procedures led to the isolation of two flavonoids and a nor diterpenoid compound which their structures elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques.
