Abstract:

The genus Salvia is a rich source of structurally diverse secondary metabolites. In a project directed at structurally interesting secondery metabolites from Iranian Lamiaceae, we studied Salvia hydrangea. This species is popularly known in Persian as Gol-e Arooneh . It grows widely in Iran, Anatolia and Transcaucasia, and its flowers are used in popular Iranian medicine as an anthelmintic and antileishmanial. We recently identified Hydrangenone, pervoskone B and salvadione C, three new antiplasmodial triterpenoids from this plant. In the peresent work, we have undertaken a further phytochemical investigation on the aerial parts of S. hydrangea to identify other compounds from this plant. Herein we have reported the isolation and identification of three known compounds,salvigen (1), oleanolic acid (2) and β-sitoesterol (3) from salvia hydrangea. Their structures were established by Thin Layer Chromatograghy (TLC) fingerprinting method. salvigenin and β-sitosterol were reported for the first time from this plant.
