Abstract:

Introduction and Aim: One-third of cancer mortalities occurred in developing countries are from Gastro-Intestinal Cancers (GICs). Because of diagnosis in advanced steps, poor prognosis and limited treatment options, GICs have become an important clinical challenge. Markazi province, because of high concentration of pollutant industries, have always been in the spotlight in this regard, so this study has been performed to assess epidemiology of GICs in this region. Methods: This cross-sectional and analytical study have assessed cancer registry data of GICs with topography codes of C۱۵ to C۲۱ in ۲۰۰۹ and ۲۰۱۴. The data have been analyzed using correlation, Chi۲ and scatter graphs using STATA software. Results: Total number of GICs in ۲۰۱۴ was ۴۱۲ persons, ۲۵۹ females and ۱۵۳ males. The most prevalent cancers were gastric (۲۰۲), colon (۹۸), esophageal (۴۲), rectum (۲۵), small bowel (۲۰), rectosigmoid (۱۳), and anal (۸) cancers, respectively. There was a significant relationship between gender and type of GICs (p<۰.۰۰۱). The prevalence of gastric, colon and esophageal cancers had decreasing trend and other cancers had increasing trend. Conclusion: High prevalence of GICs has necessitated designing precise prevention and control programs to better encounter with them. Identification the cause of decreasing or increasing trend of GICs need more assessments in future studies.
