Clinicopathological features and prognosis of elderly gastric cancer patients in West Azarbaijan province

Abstract:

Esnaashari,O. Radiotherapist, Omid Research and Treatment Hospital, Urmia, Iran. Introduction & Aim: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer globally. The aims of this study were to define the clinicopathological features and prognosis of gastric cancer in age groups ≤65 years and > 65 years in West Azarbaijan province. Methods: In this study, 922 cases of gastric cancer were investigated during 2011-2013. Patients were divided into age groups ≤65 years and > 65 years. The information was obtained using cancer registry system and hospital records of patients. Results: The average age patients were 66.43±12.5 years. In the age group ≤65 years there were significantly more Kurd ethnicity (52.2%;P=0·001), resident of the village (51.4%;P=0·003), Married (69.6%;P=0·001), surgical with chemotherapy and radiotherapy (61.8%;P=0·001) ,total gastrectomy (58.4%; P = 0·046) and stomach bleeding(86.7%; P=0·003) than in the age group > 65 years patients. In the age group > 65 years there were significantly more comorbidity (66.3%;P=0·005) and anemia(72.7%;P=0·04) than in the age group ≤65 years patients. The one, three and five year s survival rates in the age group ≤65 years were 42.3%, 19.1% and 15.3%, respectively and in the age group > 65 years were 33.3%, 11% and 7.7%, respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that age and tumor metastasis were the most important prognostic factors (p<0.05) . Conclusion: The prognosis for age group ≤65 years patients was significantly better than age group > 65 years patients. The diagnosis of gastric cancer in younger ages leads to an increase in the survival rate of patients
