Seismic Performance Assessment of a Concrete Gravity Dam using Static Pushover Analysis

Dams are of especial concern due to continuing growth of population living in downstream of dams. In fact, the imprecise analysis and design of dams can cause serious damage to the environment surrounding them. Analyses are associated with appropriate adaptation to account for inelastic response while current design practice is moving towards an increased emphasis on nonlinear static analysis methods. In this study, static pushover analysis is chosen to estimate the seismic performance of the dam. The static pushover method involves choosing the proper coordinate to evaluate the structure's behavior using a suitable push load profile, conversion of seismic demand to the same coordinate, and determination of the performance state. The procedure is then applied to a well-known concrete gravity dam (Koyna dam); finally, the results from the static pushover analysis are compared with the results from nonlinear time-history analysis. The results show that the static pushover analysis can be used effectively to estimate the response under a given ground motion with much less time and effort
