Abstract:

Natural graphite powder was oxidized to graphite oxide by a modification of Hummers andOffenman’s method and the CO2 adsorption ability by GO was investigated at temperatures of 298, 308and 318 K over the pressure range 1 to 16 bar. The results demonstrated good adsorption performance athigh pressures, suggesting this material is a potential candidate to be used as adsorbent in adsorptionprocess. The experimental data were analyzed by means of Freundlich adsorption isotherm modelindicating the existence of heterogeneous adsorption sites. The data obtained revealed a fast kinetics forthe adsorption of CO2 in which most of adsorption occurred at initial period of adsorption experiments. This renders GO as a suitable adsorbent for practical applications. Isosteric heat of adsorption wasobtained from a set of isotherms based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The results demonstrated thatphysisorption process was dominant for CO2 adsorption on prepared GO.
