Abstract:

Shakespearean plays have been constantly considered as the root of many directors adaptations. Haider (2014) as one of these newest adaptations by Vishal Bhardwaj (1965) has modernized Hamlet to talk about his contemporary society s engagements. What made Hamlet a suitable choice for Bhardwaj were its ambiguity and richness, causing to find in Hamlet a mirror of current anxieties; however, he has made some changes so that the plot would fit the Indian society. This article will analyze the relationship between Hamlet and Haider by focusing on similarities and differences in characterization and the plot in the light of the comparative literature studies to answer the following questions: What features of Hamlet have been reinforced or differed in Haider How has Bhardwaj made a contemporary Hamlet andexpandedits themes In fact, discovering new characteristics and new layers of meaning with the help of comparative literature studies in Haiderwill help its audience to see what new aspects one could find in Hamlet and in its new cultural context
