Abstract:

Despite the effects of new technologies, textbooks and instruction materials are one of the most important components in any language classrooms all over the world. It is therefore very important to conduct EFL textbook evaluation so as to ensure EFL textbooks can effectively facilitate the attainment of the teaching and learning. The present study has attempted to evaluate the English textbook which is taught in Iranian third grade of high schools. To the end, three questions were posed to determine whether the English textbook 3 is appropriate for Iranian high school students in term of subject and content, whether this book is appropriate for Iranian high school students in term of the skills, whether the activities and exercises are appropriate for communicative learning. The data were obtained from interviewing to English teachers. 22 English teachers were participated in this study. They were randomly selected from different high schools in Amol, Iran. Finding revealed that English textbook 3 did not follow communicative language teaching approach because speaking and listening skills are neglected. Also the subjects and contents presented in the textbook are not appropriated. The textbook is not appropriate for students in term of skills. So this book cannot meet the Iranian students, and teachers, needs and wants
