Abstract:

In addition to lots of the problems that both students and teachers have in learning and teaching English language, there are also some problems in teaching a foreign language in some parts of the country related to different tribes and different languages of students. Turkmen language, spoken by Turkmen people living in the northern part of the country, in this case is amongst the languages which have a different syntax and sentence structure as well as different pronunciation rules and regulations. This study attempted to conduct a software contrastive analysis of Turkmen vs. Farsi speaking EFL learners and English pronunciation of clusters, consonants and vowels. The participants in this study were 49 Iranian Turkmen and Farsi EFL learners studying at Iran Institute in GonbadeKavous. To study the roles of proficiency on English pronunciation, the participants were divided into four groups based on their performance on the OPT. The results provide evidence that the Turkmen participants could more successfully pronounce English clusters, consonants, and vowels compared to the Farsi groups. In addition, most of the participants of upper-intermediate Turkmen EFL learner groupoutperformed their low-intermediate counterparts on the pronunciation test of English clusters, consonants, and vowels. So, the findings confirmed the fact that proficiency level of students with differences in mother tongue positively correlated with the pronunciation of English sounds. It was concluded that Turkmen language is positive in helping the students in gaining a good level of English clusters, consonants, and vowels pronunciation
