Abstract:

Culture has an important role in translating children’s literature books because meanings and concepts vary across different languages. Therefore, translators face difficulties when transferring from onelanguage into another one. In this thesis, Newmark’s (1988) classification of culture-specific items and Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1958) model of translation were used respectively for categorizing andtranslation strategies of culture-specific items applied in Persian translations of an English novel, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Also, three Persian translations of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett by Reyshahri, Mahdavian, and Arjang were selected as a material of the study. Inthese studies, first, the CSIs were extracted from the source text. Then, the translation strategies of the culture-specific items of this novel were identified and compared with each other. Next, the translation strategies applied in culture-specific items of these three Persian translations were arranged and analyzed. The results showed that Reyshahri and Mahdavian used equivalence strategy as the most frequently used strategy and particularization as the least frequently used strategy and Arjang used equivalence strategy as the most frequently used strategy and adaptation as the least frequently used strategy
