An Investigation into Comparison of Forgetting Rate in Nouns,Adjectives and Adverbs among Iranian EFL Students

Abstract:

The study of language attrition has recently emerged as a new field of study in psycholinguistics. The study of language attrition can be as important as language acquisition,however, few studies investigated language attrition in L2 context. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether there was any significant difference in the forgetting rate of nouns, adjectives and adverbs among Iranian EFL learners. Participants of the study were 34 homogenized English language students from Sama Language Institute in Aliabad Katul,Golestan Province, Iran. The textbook Backpack 4 was used for instruction during ten sessions. After instrusction a piloted multiple-choice vocabulary test (posttest 1) was administered to the participanrs, the test included 20 items on nouns, 20 on adjectives, and 15 on adverbs. After an interval of 3 months, the participants took the same test as a delayed posttest (Posttest 2). The results of the paired samples t-test showed that forgetting had significantly happened. Results of the repeated measure ANOVA also showed that forgetting rate was significantly different in noun, adjective and adverb. The results of the LSD post hoc test indicated that the forgetting rate between adjective and noun and also adverb and noun was significantly different but there was no significant difference in the forgetting rate of adverb and adjective. The results of the study can be helpful for teachers to know the differences in forgetting rates of nouns, adjectives and adverbs; they are suggested to focus more on words that are more vulnerable to forgetting
