Abstract:
Permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors are utilized in various applications. Design of PMBLDC motors are mostly based on experience of designers. In this paper a comprehensive FEM-assisted approach is proposed for PMBLDC motor design. Design equations are derived from fundamental equations to develop an innovative flowchart which results in design parameters. The flowchart has feedback loops to modify the design parameters in some turn back iterations to meet the desired values. The parameters are used to implement a 3-D model of the motor for finite element analysis (FEA). The model dimensions fine tuning is performed based on the FEA results. The final results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm which satisfies the requirements. An inner rotor, 12-slot 8-pole, surface mounted permanent magnet BLDC motor is designed as a case study in this paper
