Abstract:

An experimental investigation has been carried out on FMLs consist of aluminum 2024-T3 sheets and E-glass woven fabric/epoxy against 8.7mm diameter spherical rigid projectiles. The energy absorption and damage modes of 2.4mm thick targets were studied. The number and thickness of aluminum sheets with respect to their rolling direction which is used in any specimen are different. Also 90o and 45o E-glass woven fabrics are used to take into account the influence of fiber orientation. In this study, a Gas Gun machine with Helium gas will perform the tests. The results demonstrate that by changing the number and thickness of aluminum sheets, the energy absorption will change, and different modes of damage for both aluminum and composite part are affected by changing number and thickness of aluminum sheets. Furthermore, all specimens which used E-glass woven fabrics with 45 orientation have the best performance
