Abstract:

In the recent years paying attention to biodegradable metals specially alloys based on Fe-Mn that are used for medical applications among other biodegradable materials is obvious. In this study, the effect of Ti and Zr as the third element on microstructure and biocompatibility of Fe-Mn alloy was evaluated. For this purpose the two alloys, Fe35Mn2Ti and Fe35Mn2Zr were fabricated by mechanical alloying. Then some cylindrical samples of each alloy were manufactured by SPS method with pressure of 50MPa and temperature of 1000°C for 40 minutes. The microstructure of alloys was compared by optical microscope. Biocompatibility of alloys have been analyzed by cytotoxicity test but unfortunately both samples showed serious cytotoxicity that relates to high corrosion rate which cells are trapped in.
