Abstract:
Rosa damascena Mill. Belongs to family of Roseaceae and its essential oil produces in large amount in Iran. The widely application of rose oil has raised about potential adverse health effects. We therefore investigate about cytotoxic activity of essential oil of Rosa Damascena Mill. From Kashan Iran on normal and cancer cell lines and also genotoxic effects of the oil on human lymphocytes. The cytotoxic effect and IC50 of the essential oil on the cell lines were studied followed by MTT assay and genotoxic effect of the oil was evaluate by micronucleus assay. The results showed that essential oil was significantly have cytotoxic and genotoxic effects at doses more than 10μg/ml (P<0.05). Also essential oil of Rose showed lower IC50 in cancer cell line (A549) in comparison with the normal cell line (NIH3T3). In conclusion essential oil of Rose in Kashan Iran cytotoxically and genotoxically is safe at a dose of 10μg/ml. Also it represents a good cytotoxic effect which can introduce it as an anticancer compound. Further studies are needed on anti cancer effects of Rose essential oil.
