Abstract:

Perhaps it can be said that the cause of many problems of cities lies in the lack of high-level planning and implementing partial solutions in response to various and diverse needs of urban environments and societies. Those researches, urban designs and constructed architectures which have focused on the sustainability issues generally carried out one-dimensionally which in turn cause general unbalance of city and unsustainable development. Profit-oriented, merely-economical visions in development resulted in numerous social and ecological detriments and by endangering natural organs, reducing public realms and service-recreational facilities cause the degeneration of identity and quality of regional/urban/architectural spaces. The most important question of this research is to find a solution to answer all the dimensions and requirements of the design subject in ways to enhance sustainability in all affecting and being-affected areas. Studying new theories of development reveals that in order to achieve a balanced and comprehensive sustainable development one requires to converge urban and architectural planning and designs and ignore partial solutions in a way that with a unified and holistic vision and with a multi-disciplinary approach, answer the complicated urban and architectural problems and respond to various layers of environmental, social and economic requirements. The purpose of this article is understanding the concepts of unified and multidisciplinary approach and cognition of patterns and design techniques with it. Doing so, first, with a mixture of analytical- descriptive methods, principles of multi-disciplinary design in various scales –urban/architectural/landscape- was reviewed, then by designing and describing the Zargandeh mixed-use complex situated in Zargandeh district of Tehran, the more distinctive and inclusive facets of this approach is implemented in the process of architectural design and planning.
