Heritage Values and Identity in the Age of Globalization; Methodology for evaluation of Suleymaniye

In the age of globalization, cultural heritage plays an important and unprecedented role for the protection of identity of societies. With the pressures of globalization on cities and sites with heritage value, conservation and preservation become difficult with challenging problematic aspects on multi-levels.The paper aims to discuss the concepts of heritage value and propose a methodology for the identification of the cultural heritage values in terms of preservation and development for sustainable management, evaluating Suleymaniye- Istanbul World Heritage Site as a case study.In order to understand the value systems and to evaluate the heritage assets and create a valuation system, a survey questionnaire is developed in order to understand the values of Suleymaniye heritage site and selected experts of twenty people, as a pilot group, are interviewed.The importance of the research is related to the participants and the attempts of the questions. The participants, who are selected experts on the field of heritage, gave similiar attitudes towards valuation , where as the answers related to relations and bonding of the heritage to people, events and processes seemed to be weakly defined in most cases.The efforts in the methodology for the evaluation or assessment of heritage assets seem to be undervalued internationally. This case is especially important for the protection of Islamic cultural heritage which have more multi-layered sites when compared to the western examples.
