Abstract:
Background and Aim : Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) represents a significant health concern forboth prospective mothers and their fetuses. Relationship between liver enzymes and risk of GDM is acontroversial issue. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the association between liverenzymes and risk of GDM.Methods : Observational English language studies in the last 10 years (2009-2019) has been searched fromvalid databases Pubmed, proquest, sincedirect, scopus and web of science. Finally, 34 studies was reviewed. Results : Pooled results showed a significant association between gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)levels and risk of GDM. Associations between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST) with risk of GDM were found to be non-significant.Conclusion : This systematic review highlights gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) as a significant androbust predictor of the incidence of GDM in pregnant women. There was no evidence for an increased riskof GDM with AST or ALT level.
