A Comparison of the efficacy of ferula oral capsule and metronidazole oral pill on treatment of Infection by Trichomonas Vaginalis: A Controlled Clinical Trial

Abstract:

Background and Aim : Vaginitis is a general term for vaginal disorders caused due to an infection,inflammation ,or a change in the normal vaginal flora. Trichomonas vaginalis is the third most commoncause of vaginitis. Antibacterial, antifungal and anti trichomoniasis effects of ferula have been shown invitro and in vivo studies. Thus, this research has been conducted with the purpose of Comparing the effectsof ferula oral capsule and metronidazole oral pill on treatment of trichomonas vaginalis infection.Methods : This clinical trial carried out on 2019 on 70 non-pregnant women in two groups : ferula andmetronidazole. The infection was detected by wet smear test. Oral ferula capsule was prescribed to ferulagroup and oral metronidazole tablet to the second one for 7 days. The data were collected by observationand interview forms and were analyzed by paired and independent t-tests, chi-square, mann whitney,mcnemar and Wilcoxon tests.Results : The findings of the study indicated that Wet smear resultwas positive in 34/3% in the ferula groupand 34/3% in the metronidazole group . the improvement of clinical symptoms was 100% in the ferulagroup and 40% in the metronidazole group ( p<0/001). In 14 cases (40 %), metronidazole side effects(mainly digestive disorders (54.3%) and nausea (45.7%) was seen. In ferula group, none of cases showedside effects (p<0.001). Moreover, 19 cases in metronidazole group (54.3%) and all in ferula one (100%)were agree to reuse the medicine or to suggest it to others (p<0.001).Conclusion : The treatment and improvement percentage in clinical symptoms caused by oral ferulacapsule is higher than oral metronidazole tablet. Therefore, with Further studies can replace ferula capsulefor improving the clinical symptoms of Trichomonas vaginalis infection.
