Abstract:

Background and Aim : Endometriosis is known as a chronic inflammatory disease with a prevalence rateof 10-15%; which is often associated with pains affecting different aspects of women’s lives. Therefore, itsmanagement and treatment are of utmost importance. Various interventions have been also adopted toalleviate pain in these patients including pharmacological, surgical, and rarely non-pharmacological ones,so this review study aimed to investigate pain-focused psychological interventions in women withendometriosis. Methods : This systematic review was conducted via a comprehensive search in the databases of GoogleScholar, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Springer, Elsevier, Cochrane Library, ScientificInformation Database (SID), and Magiran; using keywords of pain, chronic pain, pelvic pain, endometriosis, and psychological intervention. Accordingly, a total of 28188 relevant articles wereretrieved with no time limits and 8 studies were obtained manually. Then; 2796 duplicated articles wereremoved, 119 studies were excluded irrelevant, and 94 and 13 articles were excluded during the screeningstage of the abstracts and in the search for their full texts; respectively. Ultimately, the quality of 6experimental and quasi-experimental clinical trials was assessed using the Jadad Scale. Results : The findings revealed that pain-focused psychological interventions in patients withendometriosis included cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, yoga, and psychoeducation.Besides, the results revealed that all the given interventions had improved and reduced pain in women livingwith endometriosis. Moreover, only two articles were of good quality based on the Jadad Scale. Conclusion : Considering the effects of all the psychological interventions on improving and alleviatingpain in women suffering from endometriosis and given that the number of the relevant articles in thisdomain was limited and only two cases were of good quality; more high-quality studies were required togain stronger evidence in order to implement psychological interventions affecting pain relief in womenwith endometriosis.
