Abstract:

Architecture as an art is one of the characteristics of Islamic civilization that has the most manifestation among other aspects of it. Because it believes in the 18th verse of Zomar Who listen to speech and follow the best of it is the one Allah has guided, and the person who is understood, then on this base it passes an evolutionary and constitutive process in dealing with other civilization and cultures. In time of Prophet (PBUH) and Saudi Bedouin, Islamic architecture began its own identity by establishing Prophet Mosque in Madinah, beside other aspects of architecture that had received by other cultures, without any special glaze and decoration but full of eternal concepts, the subject that is highlighted in this research. This eternal concepts have the main role in all levels of building, from location, planning, designing to constructing and etc and this article presents only one of them. It is the subject of mosque location according to the Prophet is pattern of Islamic urbanization in an analytic and comparative method (comparing Verses and Hadith with the Prophet s Sira). Although the location of Prophet's mosque was affected by geographic environment and Saudi Arabian native culture, it matches with paradigms of Quran and hadith. Furthermore it was done by divine order and the characteristics such as: dominance of the urban space, centrality, extensible and retrofitting, independence, invitation, unity and absorbing the majority, universality, material and spiritual prosperity and development, compatible neighbourhood of mosque functions, cleanness, availability to the public, ideal for prayer and spiritual comfort, rights of land owners and etc were noticed. This article intends to investigate the characteristics of location of mosques on the base of verses and hadith and compare the result with Prophet's Sira. On this base, Islamic architecture signifies a process where all the phases and aspects are equally important. It is almost impossible to identify a phase or an aspect in that process and consider it more important than the others. The process of Islamic architecture starts with having a proper understanding and vision which leads to making a right intention. This process ends with attaining the net results and how people make use of and benefit from them. Islamic architecture is a fine blend of all these factors which are interwoven with the treads of the belief system, principles, teachings and values of Islam. Prophet (PBUH) taught that at the core of Islamic architecture lies function with all of its dimensions: corporeal, cerebral and spiritual. The role of form is an important one, too, but only inasmuch as it supplements and enhances function. Islamic architecture must embody the values and principles of Islam as a way of life, because it functions as the physical locus for human activities and promoting them. It must be man-oriented, upholding his dignity and facilitating his spiritual progression while in this world. Architecture is a means, not an end. Islamic architecture is a framework for the implementation of Islam and Nabi Mosque was the epitome of the Prophet's contributions to the evolution of the phenomenon of Islamic architecture.
