Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to analyze discourse markers in formal and informal writing. Writing is one of the four basic skills which have two main styles, formal and informal. The important element to make the writing coherence is the proper use of discourse markers. Discourse markers are lexical words which used to relate one utterance to another in discourse. The two subtypes of discourse markers are topic and message markers. Message markers have three main subtypes Inferential, Elaborative and Contrastive markers. The focus of this study is devoted to elaborative markers. Addition, deletion and change are the processes which are usually happen for discourse markers in the middle of translation. In this study formal and informal types of writing compare with their translations to analyze the rate of addition, deletion and change and to see which type is faithful to its translation
