Effectiveness of English Vocabulary Learning via Short Message Service

Vocabulary knowledge has critical roles in success in foreign language. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of learning vocabulary via SMS. 50 students took part in this study. They were assigned as experimental and control group. Before the beginning of experiment, both groups took a vocabulary test. During foure weeks of experiment the participant of experimental group were taught 50 words of Absolutely Essential Words of book, via SMS. After one month, both groups were administered a word test as a post test. Then, their pre and post test scores were compared using a dependent t-test. The result of t-test for vocabulary test (t = 7.25, p<.05) showed that their vocabulary knowledge in experimental group had improved significantly in post- test compared to pre- test. The result of this study can have pedagogical implication for language teachers, in that they can use SMS as a useful way of teaching large numbers of vocabularies
