Abstract:

The present study is a kind of analysis of interlanguage through analyzing errors of learner’s production by focusing mainly on phonological area of a fresh university language learner spontaneous speech production in conversation. In this study, a first year Iranian university student’s speech production was analyzed in terms of how phonological rules are developed in Persian language learner’s developing system through errors produced by learner. In this cross-sectional study the learner’s spontaneous speech production revealed correct and erroneous language in pronunciation area that their causes were mostly spelling pronunciation, silent letter, rule ignorance and false analogy. The source of those errors were intra-lingual, transfer of teaching and Errors which are caused by faulty teaching techniques and strategies adopted by the learner in first language learning in educational context. However, by analyzing the errors and the correct language produced by learner, the researchers concluded that first language strategy helps learner; while, the learner’s awareness of phonological differences should be raised in order not to over-generalize the rules where they are restricted in target language. Consequently, learners resort to spelling pronunciation, because of the absence of sufficient training in second language and excluding listening in classroom.Based on these evidences the researcher came to the conclusion that the learners system does not establish new form with different pronunciation to the silent consonants, or after adding suffixes to words that change their pronunciation. Learner is aware of a system in target language pronunciation, at which the language output of learners gradually becomes consistent throughout, who have already begun to identify the system and internalized certain rules; however, he applies the same rule in target language form and ignores or he is unaware of rule restriction. Several tasks must be included in EFL materials to improve learner’s awareness of target language pronunciation rules.
