Translator’s Ideological Analysis of English to Persian Translations of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices Based on Critical Discourse Analysis

In the interplay of translation and ideology, ideology has always been an inherent element in the translation. This research study aimed to explore the ideological stances of two translators – Amir Qaderi and Ali Akbar Abdolrashidi – in their Persian translations of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices (2014) (Chapter 18). Following Halliday’s model of register analysis, the corpus was compared and contrasted sentence by sentence and word by word against the source text to determine the ideologically-motivated lexico-grammatical choices of the two translators. Then the results of analysis of each translation was compared and contrasted against each other to determine the degree of deviation, that is, the strategic differences between the two translations. Translation shifts were identified, and frequencies were presented in tables. The results of the analysis of Amir Qaderi’s translation showed that he used such translation strategies as omissions, syntactic simplification, syntactic amplification, and change of denotational meanings of lexical items, in order of their frequencies. The results of the analysis of Ali Akbar Abdolrashidi’s translation showed that he used such translation strategiesas syntactic simplification, syntactic amplification, lexical expansion, and change of denotational meanings of lexical items. There were fewer instances of omissions in histranslation. In General, Amir Qaderi used an ideologically domesticating translation strategy in comparison to Ali Akbar Abdolrashi who used a foreinizing one
