Abstract:

This study aimed at investigating the effect of WBIDA on Iranian EFL learners’ reading comprehension skill. This study benefited from a quasi-experimental pre-test-post test design. Sample of this study consisted of 60 female Iranian EFL learners of Iran Language institute at intermediate level. Sampling of this study was convenient samplingbecause the two available intact groups (30 people in each class) were selected to participate in the study in the absence of random sampling. To achieve the objectives of the study three instruments were used: Top Notch book (by Joan Saslow & Allen Ascher), and two equivalent test forms, one to ensure the homogeneity of the groups in terms of their reading comprehension skill at the beginning of the study and another to assess the participants’ reading comprehension skill at the end, were designed by the researcher and used in pre-test and post-test. In this study, first, the pre-test was administered in both control and experimental groups. Then, educational sessions started. In each educational session, both experimental and control groups were taught one unit of Top Notch book (by Joan Saslow & Allen Ascher). The only point of between-group difference was the mode of provided mediation, that is, beside mainstream class sessions, experimental group also received mediations through a web-based mode using video chats. The treatment lasted for eight sessions. Ten days after the treatment, both groups were given the post-test so that their knowledge of reading comprehension skill could be measured and compared. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were used to analyze the collected data. The results showed that WBIDA has a significant effect on Iranian EFL learners’ reading comprehension skill
