Abstract:

The current study aimed at investigating the different strategies applied by Iranian translators to Persiantranslation of the neologisms created in two dictionaries of psychology compiled by Baraheni, Bateni et al, (2015) andSaatchi (2014). Each neologism was paired with its Persian equivalent provided by corresponding Iranian translators. The Persian equivalents were analyzed on the basis of Newmark s (1988.) model for the translation of neologisms. Theoutcomes revealed that the selected Iranian translators used eleven different strategies to translate the neologisms. Theliteral translation was the most frequently used strategy in both dictionaries and the least frequently one wasmodulation and through-translation in Saatchi and Baraheni-Bateni dictionaries respectively. It was also found thateleven strategies have been used in a way that their frequencies were of statistical significance. Moreover, the result ofthe Chi-square test for the comparison of the strategies used in the Baraheni-Bateni and Saatchi dictionaries revealedthat there was no statistically significant difference between the strategies used in the two dictionaries. This study asone of the pioneering studies in the context of Iran can provide an overview of the present state of translation expertiseand present useful implications for translators, translation students and students of English for specific purposes.
