Abstract:

The current study investigated the interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers in English and Persian newspaperarticles. To this end, a corpus of English and Persian political newspaper articles published around the topic of Irannuclear deal was analyzed based on Hyland’s (2005) model of interactive and interactinal metadiscourse markers. Thefindings indicated that metadiscourse markers were presented in both corpora; however, the distribution of metadiscoursemarkers was different. Results revealed that both interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers were used morefrequently in English corpus rather than Persian corpus. In addition, the findings of the statistical analysis showedendophoric markers of interactive category were only present in the Persian corpus. Moreover, there were no statisticallysignificant differences in using code glasses in both corpora. Also, transitions, evidentials and frame markers were usedmore frequently in the English corpus. With regard to the interactional category, hedges, attitude markers and engagementmarkers were used more frequently in English corpus than Persian corpus.
