Abstract:

Becoming conscious of one’s freedom, through existential anxiety, in the face of an apparently absurd universe is what makes humankind authentic in life. In order not to submit to the apparent absurdity of the world and its impositions and not to remain in doubt over one’s position and situation in the world, Existentialism offers mankind a set of principles to face all these limitations and to live one’s moments in the best possible way. Márquez’ Light Is Like Water , from the short-story collection Strange Pilgrims , presents us with such a condition. The story of two émigré Columbian kids in Spain who sail through light in their house to compensate for sailing in open waters as they did back home, presents us with the lives of people struggling with their existence as such, people who are trying to make sense of their lives before the existential crises that happen to them.
