Abstract:

This paper aims to study American Dream and its shattering in the movie AmericanPsycho by Mary Harron’s based on Bret Easton Ellis’ eponymous novel American Psycho (1991). It examines American dream in the movie. According to Hutcheon there is a sort of dialogue between the society in which the work, both the adapted text and adaptation, are produced and that in which they are received. The main purpose is to discover what kind of dialogue exists between the adapted work and the source text, and to find in this process the answer to the question why Mary Harron has chosen this novel to adapt. And finally this paper concludes that Mary Harron as a female adaptor has shattered the America dream like Bret Easton Ellis’, showing that America is not the land of Edenic possibilities anymore as it is racist, capitalistic and arrogant
