Abstract:

A modified humidification-compression desalination process-using heatpump (HC-HP) is proposed. The system performance is compared with airheated humidification-compression (AH-HC) and water heatedhumidification-compression (WH-HC) based on desalination rate andperformance ratio (PR). In HC system, the humidification anddehumidification operations occur at atmospheric and over-atmosphericpressures, respectively. Air and water heating improve the humidificationprocess, while using heat pump enhances the dehumidification process. Itis concluded that the desalination rate and PR of HC-HP are improved by30% and 49% in comparison with AH-HC and by 29% and 48% incomparison with WH-HC, respectively. Cost analysis of the proposedprocess arrangements reveals desalinated water cost of US $3.6 m-3, $4.3m-3 and $4.4 m-3 in HC-HP, WH-HC and AH-HC, respectively. It confirmsthe superior performance of modified HC system using HP.
