Abstract:

Literature in any part of the globe serves a special purpose of its own. It unravels some special conditions of its time and era. This paper has tried to show that Chekhov’s works are on the line of serving the same purpose regarding the conditions and people of his time. It also shows that Brute, one of Chekhov’s works has introduced the themes of interest and passion in the relationship of people with each other. The paper has tried to satirize the ambiguous behaviors and the foolishness of its protagonist and the whim-stricken state of the antagonist in their relationship starting with a bitter financial argument and ending with a comical marriage proposal revealing the special gist of Chekhovian conflict. It shows the moral norms of Chekhov’s time or his own social and familial relationship as his obsessions dramatized in his work The Brute. The paper has analyzed this theme at a micro level as a dominant existential obsession of people of that time at macro level in the society.
