Abstract:

Background and abjectives: Tube tracheal suction is one of the most common nursing cares in the ICU. Hence, correct and timely delivery of it will enhance the care and reduce the side effects to the patient. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of training on the frequency of suction in patients undergoing mechanicalventilation in ICU in 2019. Materials and Methods: This is an outcome-based study, in which all of the tracheal tube suction (in 59 patients hospitalized in Firouzgar and Rajaee hospitals in Tehran) at 72 hours (24, 48 and 72 hours), before and two The week after the intervention was evaluated. The data collection tool was a demographic uestionnaire for nurses and patients and report of frequency of suctioning. Educational intervention was implemented for all nurses responsible for patient care. The contents of the curriculum (the principle of suction and the complete criteria for artificial airway suction) were presented in the form of lectures, practical training, posters and booklets. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and analyzed using SPSS 21 software. IRCT Code: IRCT20180910040989N1 Findings: Comparison of the number of patient’s airway suction (before and after intervention and based on the total patient care hours) showed that the number of suction cases decreased after intervention, but it was not statistically significant (P> 0.001). Conclusion: The provision of training for comprehensive suctioning measures to nurses does not have a significant effect on reducing the frequency of suctioning in patients.
