Nursing Support System for Mothers of Hospitalized Leukemic Children: A Comparative Study

Abstract:

Background and Objective The crisis caused by leukemia and hospitalization of leukemic children in pediatric oncology wards, is one of the main sources of tension and anxiety for families of sick children and their mothers. Supporting and understanding the feelings and concerns of mothers by nurses is essential in providing better high quality of care. The aim of this study was to compare the opinions of mothers and nurses regarding nursing support for mothers of hospitalized children in a pediatric oncology ward. Materials and Methods A comparative descriptive design was used. The population studied consisted of all mothers with hospitalized leukemic children in a pediatric oncology ward (n=89) and all nurses (n=21) in the ward in Shahid Sadoughi Hospital in Yazd (Iran). Data were collected through the NPST) Nurse-parent Support Tool) and demographic questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS Version 22. Finding The most important area per mothers’ opinions were emotional (3.34±0.56) and quality of care (3.26 ±0.55) dimensions and per nurses’ opinions were emotional (3.22± 0.47) and informational (3.22± 0.43) communicational dimensions. The Mann-Whitney test showed that there were not significant differences between mothers and nurses opinions on four subscales of nursing support, in the pediatric oncologic ward (p < 0.21).Conclusion With regard to the overall mean support for mothers in the pediatric oncology ward, it is necessary to provide further support of mothers of children with leukemia by nurses. Also, hospital managers and planners must pay attention to providing suitable facilities and welfare to the patients, mothers.
