Abstract:

Reduction mammoplasty (RM) is one of the popular performed plastic surgery investigations to treat symptomatic macromasty or to correct asymmetry of breasts. It may be result to a neck and back pain, kyphosis and chronic intertrigo. The detection of breast cancer is about about 0.5%. This report also aims to describe the incidental pathologic findings in reduction mammoplasty. Methods and materials: For this cross-sectional study data were evaluated from 150 patients who underwent bilateral reduction mammoplasty at Rajaee and Velayat Hospitals between April 2007 and November 2013. The data from these participants were obtained by a check list and review of biopsy speciemens. The incidental pathologic findings in reduction mammoplasty were assessed. Both descriptive and statistical analysis methods were applied. Results: Age range of subjects in this study was 25-46 years. The most common chief complains were back mass and chronic intertrigo. Histopathology findings in ( 35) of the patients shown fibrocystic changes, (15 ) fibrosis, (8) small adenosis, ( 5 ) fibroadenoma, (11 ) duct ectasia, (6 ) typical ductal/lobular hyperplasia , (3 ) atypical ductal/lobular hyperplasia, (67) no significant pathologic changes in examined sections. Conclusion: Reduction mammoplasty specimens should be evaluated by a careful histopathological study to lead to an early detection of proliferative/ precancerous lesions for early established therapeutic strategies.
