Abstract:

Breast cancer is known as the most common malignancy among women in Iran and the world. Thus, knowing the age at which breast cancer is recognized is vital to take preventive and health measures for this type of cancer. Consequently, the present study was conducted to determine the age trend of the breast cancer incidence. To do so, 3634 recorded patients, already being identified using breast cancer recognition in the cancer center of Isfahan province for the period 2005-2012, were analyzed. According to the results of the study, a high majority of the patients belonged to the age group 40-49 (amounting to 31.6 percent), and the breast cancer incidence among women for the same period was 25.8 in a hundred thousand cases. The findings also indicated a growing trend for the breast cancer incidence rate, though the change in the average age for the incidence rate has not shifted to a younger age range. Further, invasive ductal carcinoma (amounting to 73.7 percent) was seen as the most common type of cancer. The findings also revealed that the average age for recognizing the disease is 50 (with SD=12), which, compared with the West societies, appears to occur at least a decade earlier. The findings of the study also had implications as to when to begin screening and how to determine the endangered population in screening plans.
