Abstract:
According to recent studies, orthodontic bone remodeling is predominately controlled by strainsin periodontal ligament (PDL). Therefore, strained state of PDL is the main parameter which determinesorthodontic tooth movement. Numerous finite elements simulations have been carried out in order todescribe PDL stresses due to orthodontic loads. However, these models have predominantly assumed linearmechanical properties for the PDL and performed with great simplifications in geometry. The present studysought to determine the importance of using nonlinear mechanical properties and real geometry based onCT data in computer predictions of periodontal ligament strains and tooth movements. Therefore, a threedimensionalfinite element model of human incisor constructed based on CT data from a 15-year-old boyand also the periodontal ligament was characterized by a viscohyperelastic material. On the other hand, inorder to simulate different orthodontic tooth movements, different force systems applied to the finite elementsmodel. Predictions of maximum and minimum principal strains and also von Mises stresses of PDL weredetermined for intrusion and translation movements.
