Analyzing the concept of sustainable development principles in design goals of Iranian traditional houses

A worldwide growing concern for Sustainable development has made architects and planners integrate sustainability principles with their design goals. Sustainability is an important issue to consider in design, not only due to environmental concerns but also due to economic and social matters. Therefore, sustainability principles are known as interdependent, and in the long run none can exist without the others. However, the three principles of economic, environmental, and social sustainability did not get the deserving attention of architects in a balanced and practical way in Iranian contemporary buildings, in spite of the prominent history of Iranian sustainable traditional houses. Since sustainability principles form conceptual framework for design of sustainable architecture, the study of the concept of these principles in architectural context can be a guideline for contemporary architects to better integrate sustainability principles into their design goals. For this reason, the analysis of sustainable traditional houses can help to realize how architects practically integrated these principles with their design goals to address all sustainability principles in a comprehensive way in Iran. The paper is based on library studies with applied research method and analytical -descriptive approach and aims to study the concept of sustainability principles in a practical way in order to reach a holistic framework to be used in contemporary buildings of Iran. The framework will allow architects to realize how traditional architects reach an appropriate balance between economic, social and environmental issues as well as integrating design goals with sustainable solutions in the past.
