Abstract:
Background: Acinetobactor baumannii (A. baumannii) is an important opportunistic pathogen causing a wide spectrum of nosocomial infections. Recently, the increasing resistance rate of A. baumannii to a wide range of antibiotics is causing a serious clinical problem, leading to an increase in morbidity and mortality. The present study is aimed to investigate the epidemiology of Acinetobacter Spp. And its antimicrobial resistance patterns during 2015 – 2017 in Imam Reza hospital in Mashhad. Methods: Acinetobacter spp. isolates were collected from different units of Imam Reza hospital in twenty-four months, April 2015 to April 2017. Detection of these bacteria was done based on morphological characteristics and biochemical tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on A. baumannii isolates for eight other antibiotics by disc diffusion method according to CLSI (2015) recommendations. Data Analysis was conducted by using SPSS version 16.Results: 1629 Acinetobacter spp. were isolated from various clinical samples during this study. The most sensitive drugs included Colistin (98.8%) and Gentamicin (21.9%) followed by Amikacin (11.7%), Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole (6.3%), Cefepime (3.4%), Imipenem (3.3%), Ciprofloxacin (3%), and Piperacillin/Tazobactam (2.7%).Conclusions: Through the constant increase of the cases number, and the difficulty of applying an effective treatment, the above-mentioned strains showed a multiple resistance to antibiotics. Knowing the antimicrobial resistance patterns will help guide the empirical therapy and strengthen interventional infection control measures in Imam Reza Hospital.
