Abstract:

Introduction and Objectives: nosocomial infection is considered as an important health problem all over the world, which poses heavy cost on healthcare systems and patients, and leads67to serious complications. Present study was conducted to evaluate the risk of nosocomial infection in critical care unit in selected hospital of Kerman, Iran.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted over 6 months from the beginning of December 2017 until the end of June 2018 in the selected teaching hospital of Kerman, Iran. The data were collected through a questionnaire designed by the national system for hospital infection control, was collected and measured in the ICU. Once the data were collected, they were analyzed by SPSS version 22.Findings: From 300 patients admitted to ICU, 105 patients acquired nosocomial infections. 54.3% developed respiratory infections, 28.6% developed surgical site infection, 8.9% developed bloodstream infections and 8.9% developed urinary tract infection. from which 17 deaths (16.2%) were due to hospital infections, 27 deaths (25.7%) were due to other causes. Also, 61 patients (58.10%) were discharged from the ICU.Conclusion: Considering the higher prevalence of respiratory infection in the critical care unit compared to other infections which caused by respiratory ventilators, it could be said that, the longer use of these equipment increases the risk of respiratory infection. Therefore, the knowledge and performance of staffs in regard to correct methods of disinfection must be increased. Introduction of clinical guidelines regarding disinfecting substances and sterilizing equipment can also minimize the possibility of transmission of nosocomial infection.
