Abstract:
Aims and objectives: Patients acquired healthcare-associated infections in the course of treatment in a hospital. Hand hygiene prevents healthcare-associated infections, but nursing students don‟t follow hand hygiene completely. The present study explores hand hygiene challenges in nursing students in the clinical settings.Method:This study was a qualitative interpretive approach that conducted in Kerman, Iran in 2016-2018. The researchers interviewed 18 of the nursing students and 3 of the nursing instructors using semi-structured, in-depth, face-to-face individual interviews.Result:Four main categories were extracted from qualitative data including „Damage to the skin due to a poor quality of hand hygiene solution‟, „Lack of knowledge‟, „Lack of time‟, and „Shortage of nurses‟.Conclusions :The results support prior research and found that participants highlighted the importance of quality of hand hygiene solution in the hospitals. Nursing managers should prioritize hand hygiene education and compensate for the shortage of nurses.
