Abstract:

Background and Aim: Streptococcus pneumonia (pneumococcus) is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections such as pneumonia, otitis media, sinusitis, and one of the most important pathogens responsible for severe illnesses, such as meningitis and sepsis. These diseases are more prevalent in children. Hence we decided to study the frequency of carriers of pneumococci and its antibiotic resistance among Kerman kindergarten children.Materials and method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 1396 on 280 children residing inkindergartens in different regions of Kerman city. Sampling was done using sterilized swabs from a child s nasopharynx, and immediately cultured on a pre-prepared selective Blood Agar medium. Immediately, the specimens were transferred to the School of Medicine s microbiology laboratory for confirmed and microbial sensitivity tests. Findings: Of the 280 children who were between 6 months and 6 years of age, 44% weremale. In the studied children, 80 ones (29%) had a history of otitis media. The majority of the children were fed exclusively from breast milk with an incidence of 188 (67%) infants. Pneumococcus colonization was found in no one. Conclusion: Howeverloss of pneumococcus in this region s children nasopharynx specimen is because of study limitation, but the presence of this pathogenic bacterium in the children nasopharynx of Kerman kindergartens is very rare.
