Investigating those bacteria which cause nosocomial infection in the emergency department of one of the educational hospitals of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences

Abstract:

Introduction and Objectives:In the recent years, modern and well-equipped hospitals have been constructed giving all kinds of diagnosis and treatment services to the patients; however, sometimes nosocomial infections are unintentionally transferred to the patients through these services which might even cause their deaths. This study is aimed to recognize the type and the amount of microbial contamination in the air of the emergency department of one of the Zahedan‟s hospitals.Materials and Methods: For this descriptive study, bacteria samples were collected with two active and passive methods from 3 units of the emergency department of one of the Zahedn‟s hospitals during the 4 seasons of a year at the beginning and the end of the day shift. Afterwards, grown colonies of bacteria were counted and then were examined and colored for the purpose of determining them; bacteria intensity was measured by cfu/m3.Results: in this research, 17 types of bacteria including Golden Staphylococcus, Epidermis Staphylococcus, Saprophticoccus staphylococcus, micrococcus, streptococcus (type A), bacillus cereus, bacillus subtilis, diphtheria, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli and pseudomonas were recognized and counted. The average of the total amount of bacteria in the beginning of the shift was 103/88±33/84 cfu/m3 and in the end of the shift it was reported as101/69±57/87 cfu/m3. In the beginning of the shift, Micro coccus and golden staphylococcus were highly observed; on the other hand, Branhamla was the least present bacterium among all the other bacteria.141Conclusion: The reorganization of those 17 types of bacteria suggests that proper conditioning systems, UV lights, positive pressure ,sterilized bathrooms and surrounding environments are significant in reducing the contamination level and speeding patients‟ recovery process.
