Abstract:

The concept of seismic rehabilitation has been known from the early days; however it started to be implemented in the last three decades. In recent years, the seismic design provisions necessary for the construction of new buildings and rehabilitation of existing structures have been witnessing some rapid changes. Comprehensive research is now being conducted to evaluate the current seismic design methodology implemented in different codes and standards. Since seismic rehabilitation is a comparatively new issue, most of the attempts have been focused on the seismic performance and the majority of investigations have been concentrated on the various methods to improve the behavior of the structures. Frequently, because of different limitations in the process of retrofitting, the architectural concepts and serviceability issues may be neglected or even may be violated. The consequences of disregarding the architectural aspects may have unpredictable adverse effects on the rehabilitated structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rehabilitation of buildings from the architectural point of view. Within the scope of this goal, different methods of rehabilitations are presented and by addressing some case studies, benefits and defects of each method is probed from architectural viewpoints and aesthetic aspects.
